At Speed we recognise the impact of wellbeing and the need for a supportive and open work environment to challenge mental health stigma. That’s why we’ve taken the ‘Time to Change’ employer pledge – a growing social movement organised by Mind and Rethink Mental Illness. The pledge is a public demonstration of our commitment to tackling the stigma and discrimination associated with mental ill health in the workplace.
Approximately a third of the UK PR industry – 32% – say they’ve suffered or been diagnosed with poor mental health at some point during their career according to PR industry body PRCA (this is higher than the 1 in 4 people in the UK general population).
PR is a fast-paced industry managing both the media and digital world. This is what makes it fun but also sometimes pressurised. Not all stress is bad but what we want to achieve is a healthy balance and an environment where people feel they can talk openly about how they are feeling and reach out for support when they need to.
In addition to pledging our support for Time to Change, we’re also launching a new programme of support – Balance. The programme provides enhanced information resources, training and activities. Following the Five Steps to Wellbeing principles created by Mind – Connect, Be Active, Take Notice, Learn and Give – we now have mental health (Balance) champions and accredited Mental Health First Aiders in the team so we can provide the right guidance and support helping people to talk openly and comfortably about their own wellbeing.
People can only develop their potential, make a meaningful contribution, work productively and deal most effectively with challenges when they have balance in their lives. We’re committed to a healthy workplace and culture, with wellbeing at its heart.
